According to the Visiting Fellows Programme of the University of Pisa a Visiting Fellow (VF) is a scientifically qualified researcher who carries out scientific studies, research, collaboration and exchange activities within a Department of the University of Pisa. The Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry of the University of Pisa (DCCI) integrates the general call of the University of Pisa of the link mentioned above with the following specifications.
1. THE PROCEDURE
The Visiting Fellows are nominated via an application process or by invitation. The appropriate form must be submitted to the International Coordinator (CAI) of the DCCI at the address:
In either case, the final decision is subject to the approval by the Department Board.
A. Application process
Candidates are welcome to apply as Visiting Fellow by:
• filling the form (attachment A)
• attaching their curriculum vitae
• attaching a copy of an ID (a passport, in the case of a non-EU citizen)
When filling attachment A, candidates must declare:
• the expected duration and dates of the visit to the Department
• the title and a brief description of the research or study programme
• a name of a scientific representative working in the Department.
The scientific representatives may be:
• Full professors, Associate professors and permanent Researchers of the DCCI
• Researchers with a tenure (RTD) can invite a Visiting Fellow only if their tenure covers the whole stay of the Visiting Fellow.
B. Invitation process
A Visiting Fellow may be invited by:
• Full professors, Associate professors and permanent Researchers of the DCCI
• Researchers with a tenure contract can invite a Visiting Fellow only if their tenure covers the whole stay of the Visiting Fellow.
The professor or researcher who extends the invitation must
• fill in the appropriate form (attachment B)
• attach the curriculum vitae of the candidate
• attach a copy of an ID (a passport, in the case of a non-EU citizen) of the candidate
2. FINANCIAL SUPPORT
The Department can provide a financial support for one or more positions on the basis of available funds. Candidates may apply for financial support by filling the appropriate form (Attachment C-Financial Statement). The financial support will be granted according to the criteria listed in the following section.
3. SELECTION PROCESS AND CRITERIA
The International Coordinator (CAI) and the Head of the DCCI will screen the invitation/application positions. The screening will be based on:
• CV and publications list;
• Evaluation of the research / teaching project to carry out at the DCCI.
Visiting Fellows are nominated by the Department Board and will receive an official letter issued by the Head of the DCCI.
The granting of the financial support will be decided by a committee including the International Coordinator, the Head of the DCCI and other DCCI’s Professors. The committee will meet at least twice a year for evaluating the applications for financial support. The decision will be taken in line with the following criteria:
• CV and publications list;
• Evaluation of the research / teaching project to carry out at the DCCI.
• Length of the visiting period.
The committee draws up a ranking list of the candidates which is subject to approval by the DCCI Board.
N.B. After the nomination of the Visiting Fellow, the scientific representative at the DCCI must submit the guest registration form (modulo ospite) and request the medical examination (please see the FAQ section).
4. COMMUNICATION
When the Visiting Fellow starts the visiting period, the Head of the DCCI must communicate to the University International Cooperation Office (
• Name and surname;
• Place and date of birth;
• Citizenship;
• Type of guest (e.g. professor, post-doc, etc.);
• University / foreign institution of origin;
• Period of stay (indicating the start and end dates of the period);
• Study, teaching and / or research project;
• The scientific representative of the Department and, if the mobility takes place within an exchange agreement, the Visiting Fellow must fill the Exchange Agreement.
5. BENEFITS
During the Visiting Fellow’s visit period s/he is considered a member of the DCCI. This means she/he can use the study and research facilities, following the common regulations of DCCI.
The Visiting Fellow will receive temporary credentials to access the University’s internet network as well as an email address, valid for the whole visit period at the Department.
The Visiting Fellow may be granted a refund of the documented expenses in the limit of the assigned grant. In case of renounce, the funding can be made available for other positions, following the evaluation ranking. Please notice that documented eligible expenses can include only travel and stay costs directly related to the period in Pisa and in any case they will be subject to evaluation by the CAI, the Head and the Secretary of the DCCI.
6. TYPE OF ACTIVITIES
Throughout the entire duration of the visit period at the University of Pisa, the Visiting Fellow will carry out at least one of the follow activities:
• Research
During the visit period at the DCCI, the Visiting Fellow can carry out the research activities as agreed with the scientific representative and approved by the DCCI board. If the object of the visiting period is the development of research activities, during the visit period at the department, the Visiting Fellow must present their research projects in workshops and seminars organized by the DCCI.
• Teaching
During the visit period at the department, the Visiting Fellow can teach certified activities within a degree programme, a doctoral school and a summer school. The possibility to carry out teaching activities of any form is subject to the possession of necessary scientific qualifications and, in any case, must be agreed upon with the scientific representative at the DCCI and with the Head of the study programme or the Coordinator of the Doctoral school or of the summer school.
